Using the Class Toolbar

Overview

The Class Toolbar is present on class screens. If a class has been entered but not started, the Class Toolbar shows a green START CLASS button. Active-class only functions, Push Website  Blank Screen, Limit Web, Snapshot, and Share Instructor Screen, are disabled. Refer to the table below for more information about each button's function.



If a class has started, the START CLASS button is not present. All other buttons become active, and the Class Toolbar looks similar to the below.

Exit Class (1)
Exits an open class.

Starts a class. The START CLASS button does not display after the class becomes active.

Class Settings (3)
Opens the Class Settings page.
From the Class Settings page, you can:
  1. Update class details (class name, class description, class banner)
  2. Update the class roster
  3. Set web limiting options
  4. Set blank screen options
  5. Remove the class
Add Devices (4)
Adds student Windows and Mac devices.
Use this to add additional Windows or Mac student devices to LanSchool Air. For complete instructions, see:

Change Class View (5)
Changes the class view. 

Options are:
  1. Grid View
  2. List View
  3. Group View
  4. Set All to Active Tab View
  5. Set Selected to Active Tab
  6. Set All to Desktop View
  7. Set Selected to Desktop View
Change Tile Size (6)
Changes the student thumbnail size in Grid View.
Options are:
  1. XS (X-Small)
  2. S (Small)
  3. M (Medium)
  4. L (Large)
  5. XL (X-Large)

 Sort   Students   (7)

 Students will automatically be sorted by online to offline in alphabetical order or teachers can custom sort the students. 
  Sort students can only be used when in Grid View


Push a website (8)

Pushes a website out to student screens.
See Pushing a Website to Students. Not available until class has started.

Blank student screens (9)

Pushes a blank screen out to student screens.
Blank screen options can be customized during setup or changed later.  See Using Blank Screen. Not available until class has started.

Limit student websites (10)

Limits the websites students are allowed to view.
Web limiting can be configured during setup or changed later. See Using Web Limiting. Not available until class has started.
Limit student applications

Limits the applications students are allowed to use.
Application limiting can be configured during setup or changed later. Application limiting is only available for Windows and Mac devices.

 Instructors can choose to capture screenshots from individually selected students or from all students in the class. See Capturing a Screen Snapshot. Not available until class has started.

Share  Screen

Shares the instructor's screen with students
Instructors can choose to share their screen, application window or browser tab with students. See Sharing Instructor Screen. Not available until class has started.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I forget to dismiss my class at the end of the day?

If you forget to dismiss your class, what happens depends on your class and organization settings:

  • If Automatic Dismissal is enabled for the class, the class will automatically end at the configured dismissal time.
  • If Automatic Dismissal is not enabled but your organization has Active Hours configured, the class will automatically end when the Active Hours restriction begins.
  • If neither Automatic Dismissal nor Active Hours are configured, you must manually dismiss the class.

Using Automatic Dismissal or Active Hours can help prevent classes from remaining active after the school day.

Why can't my teacher start a class?

If a teacher cannot start a class, check whether the current day and time are within the organization's Active Hours. If the teacher sees a "Currently outside of active hours" notification, the teacher is attempting to start a class outside the configured schedule.

Can I block Chromebook applications with LanSchool Air?

No. LanSchool Air App Limiting is not supported on Chromebooks.

Use the Google Admin Console to manage and block applications on student Chromebooks.

Can different classes have different App Limiting lists?

Yes. App Limiting settings are configured per class. Teachers can create different Allow Only or Block Only lists for different classes.

Why isn't Web Limiting working?

Verify that the LanSchool Air browser extension is installed and enabled and that Web Limiting is active for the student. Also check whether the student is using an unsupported browser, private/incognito browsing, Chrome Guest Mode, or a different domain than the one configured in the Web Limiting list.

Can I make Desktop View the default for my organization?

No. Desktop View cannot be configured as the organization-wide default student view.

Active Tab View is the default view for Chromebook students. Teachers can select Set All to Desktop View when they want to switch the students in an active class to Desktop View.

Can each group have a different Web Limiting list?

No. All groups use the same Web Limiting list.

You can turn Web Limiting on or off for individual groups, but you cannot assign a different list to each group.

Can I remotely control or take over a student's computer?

No. LanSchool Air does not support remote control or remote takeover of student computers. Teachers cannot take control of a student's mouse, keyboard, or computer.

There is no remote-control feature to enable or configure in LanSchool Air.

LanSchool Air does provide other remote classroom management features. For example, teachers can monitor student screens and, on supported devices, perform actions such as closing browser tabs. These classroom management actions do not provide remote control of the student's computer.

If you are looking for a feature that allows you to operate a student's computer remotely using their mouse and keyboard, that functionality is not available in LanSchool Air.
