Installing LanSchool Air for Windows Student

Installing LanSchool Air for Windows Student

Overview

This article explains how to install the Windows client on an individual student device. For instructions on deploying the Windows client to a large number of student devices, see Mass Deploying LanSchool Air for Windows Student.

This option is only available for manually created classes. You will not be able to generate a link to the student installer if your classes are imported from Clever, Google Classroom or CSV.
You must have local administrator rights to install software on the student devices in order to perform the steps below.

Generating the Link to Download Student Installer

  1. As a teacher, log into LanSchool Air and manually create the class you will add students to.

  2. Select Start Class.

  3. Select the Add Device button.

  4. Select Add New Student.

  5. Select Get Access Link to generate a unique URL.  The URL is valid for 60 minutes and only valid while the window is open.

If the Get Access Link has, 'This option is disabled for your organization', this means the Site Admins have prevented instructors from adding new student devices to the organization.

The dialog window must stay open during the client installation. If the window is closed before completion, or more than 60 minutes has gone by, you will have to start over.

  6. Copy or write down the generated URL.  Each student device will need to access this URL to download a copy of the installer.

  7. Once the student devices are installed with the LanSchool Air Student client, select Finish Adding at the bottom of the window.
If your licensed device count is over by 1 or more devices, the Add Device button will be disabled and Requires a valid license will appear when hovering over the button. If you require additional licenses please contact your LanSchool Air sales representative.

Downloading and Installing

If you encounter issues downloading the LanSchool Air Student installing please see Resolving Installer Download Issues for LanSchool Air.
  1. Open a browser on each student computer where the client is to be installed.

  2. Using the browser, open the unique URL from the Add Computer(s) to Class pop-up window opened earlier by the teacher.

  3. From the Download page, select the reCAPTCHA check box, answer the reCAPTCHA questions, and select . The client installer downloads.

  4. When the download is complete, the file shows at the bottom of the page.

  5. Select the arrow and run or open the installer. If you are not already logged in as an admin, you will be prompted to enter credentials.

The file name is unique to your class and must not be changed.

  6. If a prompt appears stating that "Windows protected your PC", click the More Info link.

  7. Then click the "Run anyway" button.

  8. The installation begins, and the progress bar displays, followed by a success message when it completes.

  9. Select  Done on the success message. LanSchool Air is now running in the system tray or notification area of the device.

The student device is provisioned to your organization and uses a license until a site administrator removes the device.

Uninstalling LanSchool Air

  1. On Windows 10, select the "Start" menu and open Settings

  2. Select Apps

  3. Search for LanSchoolAir in the list

  4. Select LanSchoolAir and press the Uninstall button

  5. You will be prompted for Administrator permission to perform the uninstall.

  6. The LanSchool Air icon will no longer appear in the system tray.
After the LanSchool Air client is uninstalled, this device will no longer be available for instructors to manage in a class. However, the device name will still appear in the list of provisioned student devices. To remove this and free up the license, a Site Admin should go to Settings > Students and select and remove the device by name.

Configuring Recommended Settings

The following Windows settings are recommended to ensure the best experience with LanSchool Air. Many of these settings are optional, but are recommended to prevent students from circumventing the LanSchool Air app or extension.

Disabling Fast User Switching

LanSchool Air does not support Windows Fast User Switching feature. The student client will not function properly when the computer is switched to a second user account. It is recommended to disable Fast User Switching in order for the Windows student client to function properly.

Please see Disabling Fast User Switching for more information on how to disable this feature.

Disabling Edge Split Screen

LanSchool Air is unable to limit the web in Microsoft Edge when the student uses the Edge Split Screen feature. The LanSchool Air extension does not register the second screen and will not block the website. It is recommended to disable Edge Split Screen in order for the LanSchool Air web limiting to function properly.

Please see Disabling Edge Split Screen for more information on how to disable this feature.
