Selecting Student View Modes (Active Tab View vs. Desktop View)

Selecting Student View Modes (Active Tab View vs. Desktop View)

Overview

These instructions apply to student Chromebooks only. Windows and Mac clients always display Desktop View.

LanSchool Air provides two different ways to display student screens of Chromebook students to teachers: Active Tab View and Desktop View.  For more information on student thumbnail states, see Viewing Student Screens .

Active Tab View (Default)

LanSchool Air displays a live image of a student's active browser tab. If the student does not have a browser open, LanSchool Air displays a placeholder image. Unlike with Desktop View, students do not have to grant permission to share the active tab.

Desktop View

Desktop View allows LanSchool Air to show the student's full screen desktop and all open apps and windows.

Setting Desktop View

When a class is active, use the Change Class View button on the Class Toolbar to change the way you view student screens. When you select the Change Class View button, one of the following menus displays.
  1. If you selected individual students, all of the menu options are available.

  2. If you wish to set the whole class Desktop View, only actions that apply to all students are available.

Select either Set All to Desktop View or Set Selected to Desktop View. This will then prompt the students to share their screen.

Accepting the Screen Share Prompt

LanSchool Air must first prompt students for permission to share their screens. Students are prompted for permission to share as soon as the teacher selects Desktop View. LanSchool Air displays a placeholder thumbnail image until the student grants screen sharing permission.

Students receive the following prompt each time the teacher selects Desktop View. They must select the screen, and then select Share. The Share button is not active until the student selects the screen.

Students using Chromebooks with multiple monitors are prompted to select the monitor to share. They cannot share multiple screens at the same time. By default, LanSchool Air displays the student's active view tab in the teacher's thumbnail, regardless of which monitor the tab is on.

Once the screen share prompt has been selected, the student's entire screen can now be viewed.
